Happy Friday friends! Earlier in the week, we posted a homemade birthday cake that we made for Gavin’s 3rd birthday. It was a yellow cake with chocolate frosting and was our first real attempt at making a cake from scratch. But we knew that we would need two cakes for Gavin’s party, so we decided to make one of them from scratch and the other from a box and turn it into a Food Face-Off Friday. We had friends and family try both cakes at the party and share their thoughts. Today’s Face-Off is between Betty Crocker yellow cake with chocolate frosting and homemade yellow cake with chocolate frosting.
We aren’t going to compare the nutrition here. It’s cake for crying out loud! We aren’t going to compare the price either. It would be very difficult to determine how much the homemade cake would cost since you may or may not have a lot of the ingredients on hand already. Today we are going to compare “taste” and “time.”
Betty Crocker:
Taste: Classic boxed cake taste you are probably used to. We’ve all had boxed cake, we know the taste. The cake was light, crumbly and very sweet. The frosting was smooth and creamy.
Time: Prep time and cook time was about 45 minutes (not including cooling time).
Homemade Cake:
Taste: Rich and buttery, more like a pound cake. This cake was not nearly as crumbly as the Betty Crocker cake. There was a hint of orange zest in the cake, which tasted great with chocolate.
Time: Prep time and cook time was about 1 hour (not including cooling time).
Friends and family at the party were split on which cake they liked more. Some preferred the classic Betty Crocker taste while others preferred the homemade cake. Personally we liked the homemade cake more. We thought the flavor was better and just tasted more “real.” It didn’t have the powdery taste like boxed cakes do. It was also much easier to eat. The boxed cake crumbled apart when trying to eat it, but the homemade cake stayed together. It did take a little more time and effort to bake the homemade cake, but we thought it was worth it.
Based upon the opinions from the birthday party, it’s hard to name a winner. But for us personally:
Overall Winner: Homemade Birthday Cake
Hope everyone has a great weekend! Cook and eat something amazing!
